šŸ¦‹ Field Note — The Unoccupied Specimen

Classification: Archival Anomaly
Observed location: Mothkeeper’s Wing
Specimen: None

During a routine inspection of the Mothkeeper’s Wing, an unused specimen pin was discovered in one of the oldest display cases.

There is nothing unusual about an empty pin.

There is something unusual about its label.

The small card beneath it reads:

SPECIMEN OBSERVED
COLLECTION STATUS: UNSUCCESSFUL

No species is listed.

No date appears anywhere on the card.

At first, the entry was assumed to belong to a specimen that had been lost or removed.

The Archive ledger says otherwise.

The corresponding record contains only three observations.

Wings visible when closed.

Not visible when open.

Do not mistake absence for departure.

No physical description follows.

No collection location was recorded.

And there is no indication that a specimen was ever placed inside the case.

The pin itself remains completely untouched.

šŸ•Æļø Subsequent Observation

Several weeks after the label was discovered, a Keeper noticed something faint behind the glass.

Two symmetrical patches of dust had been disturbed on either side of the empty pin.

They resembled wings.

The case was cleaned.

The following morning, the marks had returned.

They were slightly larger.

Archive Note

The display case is no longer cleaned.

No attempt has been made to remove the pin.

A new handwritten instruction has appeared beneath the original record.

If you can see the moth, close your eyes.

No one currently working within the Conservatory remembers writing it.
