🕯️ The Rainward Glass

🕯️ Archive of Botanical Phenomena

Classification: Unexplained Atmospheric & Botanical Phenomenon
Observed Location: Eastern Conservatory Windows
Known Occurrences: Eight
Specimens Collected: None
Current Status: Observation Ongoing

The first occurrence was documented during an otherwise uneventful inspection of the Haunted Conservatory.

A single windowpane had become wet.

There had been no rain for eleven days.

The surrounding glass remained dry.

Initially, condensation was suspected. However, closer inspection revealed that the droplets were collecting on the interior surface of the glass.

And they were moving upward.

Very slowly.

Individual droplets traveled toward the upper corners of the window, occasionally merging before separating again.

None reached the frame.

By morning, the glass was dry.

The phenomenon repeated six nights later.

This time, a Keeper placed a sheet of botanical paper beneath the window to collect any falling moisture.

Nothing fell.

Instead, the droplets gathered near the center of the pane, forming an irregular shape resembling a leaf.

No corresponding plant could be identified.

The shape remained visible for approximately seventeen minutes before the droplets began moving upward again.

Curiously, the climbing ivy surrounding the window had turned away from the glass.

Its leaves remained in this position for three days.

Subsequent Observations

On the seventh recorded occurrence, a Keeper noticed that the dust on the opposite side of the glass had been disturbed.

A small oval patch appeared perfectly clean.

The dimensions corresponded almost exactly to the previous formation of water droplets.

No fingerprints were found.

No evidence of contact was recorded.

The window has not been cleaned since.

A handwritten notation appeared beneath the observation.

We have been watching the water.

Perhaps we should be watching the other side of the glass.

Eighth Observation — The Discovery

On the eighth occurrence, a Keeper examined the exterior of the affected window while the droplets were still moving.

Something was growing against the glass.

At first, it appeared to be a small botanical specimen pressed between the windowpanes.

Its leaves were nearly transparent, threaded with delicate black veins.

Its roots extended upward.

The droplets traveling along the interior glass appeared to follow these roots, disappearing one by one as they reached them.

The specimen could not be removed.

Closer examination revealed that it was not growing against the glass at all.

It was growing within it.

No opening, fracture, or disturbance of the windowpane could be found.

By sunrise, the specimen had vanished.

The surrounding ivy had begun turning toward the window again.

🕯️ Additional Archival Observations

The disappearance of the specimen was initially recorded as a temporary botanical manifestation.

However, subsequent examination of the window revealed something peculiar.

Although the plant could no longer be seen, the glass continued to behave as though something occupied the space within it.

Under certain lighting conditions, faint distortions appeared along the same branching paths previously occupied by the specimen.

No botanical material was visible.

No change in the thickness or composition of the glass could be established.

The current working theory suggests that the specimen does not disappear between occurrences.

It simply ceases to be visible.

Whether the plant requires moisture to become visible, or whether the climbing droplets reveal something ordinarily concealed within the glass, remains undetermined.

No attempt has been made to break the windowpane.

Final Archival Notation

Weather Conditions: Clear skies during all recorded occurrences.

Water Source: Undetermined.

Direction of Movement: Consistently upward.

Botanical Identification: Unsuccessful.

Specimen Location: Within the eastern windowpane.

Visibility: Intermittent.

Collection Attempts: None authorized.

The eighth observation has been added to the official record.

A small annotation appears beside the botanical illustration.

We believed the window was collecting rain.

It appears something was drinking it.

Current Status: Specimen presumed present. Observation ongoing.

The eastern window has been removed from the Conservatory’s cleaning schedule.

Visitors are advised not to disturb the glass.

Especially when it appears empty.
