A lantern has begun flickering beside a cabinet we haven’t opened in a while:
Reliquary of Forgotten Curiosities
Wedged behind several specimen boxes is a tiny glass vial. It has no cork, yet whatever is inside has never spilled.
The contents look like ordinary garden soil.
Mostly.
When the vial is turned upside down, the soil remains perfectly still—but something beneath it shifts.
A thin little tunnel appears against the glass.
Then another.
By morning, both are gone.
A brittle tag tied around the neck reads:
FOUND BENEATH A PLANT THAT DOES NOT EXIST
There is no specimen number.
No collection date.
And when the Reliquary inventory was checked, something stranger appeared: three earlier versions of the inventory mention the vial.
Each gives a different location where it was found.
One says the Moon Garden.
One says beneath the eastern Conservatory stairs.
The oldest simply says:
returned.
🖤🌿
Do not add water.
We tried that once.
